2 prime trade targets come off the block for the Edmonton Oilers

Sources have shared that the Blue Jackets are no longer an option and have been taken off the list for trades.

Oilers’ trade targets are off the list

As many experts expected, NHL general managers are using the Olympic break to make calls and get ahead of the upcoming trade deadline.

Due to the roster freeze that started on February 4 and will end on February 24, teams have less time to make their trading moves. Therefore, it helps to be prepared for when the freeze is over, as there will likely be a lot of trade action.

Right now, it looks like a few potential trades for the Oilers are no longer possible. Reports say that Columbus GM Don Waddell is working on contract extensions for Mason Marchment, Boone Jenner, and Charlie Coyle.

“There has been much less talk about Coyle, Marchment, and Jenner since [Rick] Bowness was brought on, and with how the team is playing now,” a source mentioned. “Whether or not they get new contracts before the Olympic break ends, they will not be available for trade as we head into the deadline. Waddell plans to keep them and improve the team so they can make the playoffs. ”

All three players are strong forwards known for their physical play, which is something Edmonton is hoping to add to their team before the March 6 trade deadline.

While the Olympic break shortens the time for GMs to make final deals, it also gives them a chance to work out contract extensions for players who might have been less important before the roster freeze started.

For now, everyone is focused on the Olympics, but you can be sure that NHL GMs are busy trying to make the best trades possible.
