Russell crossed the finish line just in front of Mercedes teammate Lewis Hamilton, seemingly perfecting the ambitious one-stop plan.
After the race, he rejoiced on top of the podium until hours later, word leaked out that he had been disqualified.
When it was discovered that Russell’s car was 1.5 kg underweight, he was disqualified.
His vehicle, which honours teammate Lewis Hamilton, was first weighed at 798 kg, the lowest weight allowed for the car and driver combined after his Mercedes was disqualified for being 1.5 kg underweight.
However, stewards discovered later that the vehicle’s fuel tank had not been completely empty, therefore the weight was changed to 796.5 kg.
Later on Sunday, Russel took to social media to share his reaction after an eventful day.
“He wrote : “heartbreaking… We came in 1.5kg underweight and we have been disqualified from the race.
We left it all on the track today and I took pride in crossing the line first. The will be more to come.
