If Lewis Hamilton needed a family car, the Mercedes-AMG GLC63 would be his pick. This new F1-inspired family vehicle has hit the market.

The 2024 Mercedes-AMG GLC63 S E Performance combines ‘F1-inspired’ and ‘family friendly’ features in an unprecedented way. It’s the latest addition to the AMG lineup, replacing the previous model with significant changes under the hood. Gone is the 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8, replaced by a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged engine with plug-in hybrid assistance. This change, driven by emissions regulations, might sound unappealing, but it brings cutting-edge technology from Formula 1, including a sophisticated turbocharger and an advanced electric motor and battery system.

Despite initial skepticism, the new powertrain impresses with its stats. The old V8 GLC63 produced 375kW of power and 700Nm of torque, while the new four-cylinder engine delivers 350kW and 545Nm. Adding the electric motor’s 150kW and 320Nm results in a total output of 500kW and 1020Nm of torque—125kW and 320Nm more than before.

This new GLC63 isn’t an ordinary plug-in hybrid. The battery is a vital performance component rather than just a fuel-saving device. Drawing from F1 technology used by drivers like Lewis Hamilton, the 6.1kWh lithium-ion battery is designed for frequent power bursts without sacrificing overall performance.

This clever tech is just part of the story. The switch to a smaller engine reduces front-end weight, and the rear-mounted electric motor balances weight distribution. Coupled with new rear-axle steering, the SUV handles like a sports sedan.

During a test drive on Queensland’s winding roads, the GLC63’s power and poise stood out. It accelerates from 0-100km/h in 3.5 seconds, faster than the old V8, delivering relentless performance. The rear-wheel steering enhances handling, and the firm sports suspension maintains precision across various conditions.

Despite its performance, the GLC63 remains a family-friendly SUV. The luxurious interior features leather, premium materials, sports seats, and a thick-rimmed, Alcantara-trimmed steering wheel with AMG-specific controls.

This SUV is practical for everyday use and thrilling for spirited drives. While some may miss the V8’s roar, the increased power and speed offer ample compensation. Like the evolution of F1 engines, the GLC63 trades sound for superior performance, providing an enhanced driving experience.
