The Cubs initially held a 5-2 lead, bolstered by home runs from Happ, Cody Bellinger, Pete Crow-Armstrong, and Miguel Amaya. However, the Blue Jays rallied in the ninth inning to tie the game, forcing extra innings. Tyson Miller pitched a scoreless frame to earn the win for Chicago.
In the ninth, Toronto loaded the bases and eventually tied the game on a triple by George Springer, but they couldn’t push ahead in extra innings, ending their three-game winning streak. Cubs starter Kyle Hendricks allowed two runs (one earned) over five innings, while Toronto’s Yariel Rodríguez gave up four runs in five innings.
