The situation is serious in Edmonton. After a series of uneven games that have put the Edmonton Oilers at risk in the Pacific Division, general manager Stan Bowman made some straightforward comments about the team’s goalie situation on Monday.
When he spoke to the press before the March 6 deadline, Bowman was very honest. He recognized that head coach Kris Knoblauch needs more solid defense from the players on the ice. However, he also specifically mentioned that goalies Tristan Jarry and Calvin Pickard haven’t been making the top-level saves needed for a team aiming for the Stanley Cup.
The stats support his disappointment. Right now, Edmonton is in 3rd place in the division with 66 points, but they have let in five or more goals in three of their last five games.
“I think our goalies haven’t been doing well. They can improve, but our team has put them in some difficult situations. I want to see our goalies play more consistently. I’m not saying they are entirely to blame, but how we play as a team will really help them perform better,” Bowman said about the goaltenders.
It’s unusual for a general manager who usually keeps his thoughts private to openly criticize the goalies. By doing this, Bowman has made it clear to other teams that he is looking for a better option in net.
Are the Edmonton Oilers going to try to get a new goaltender?
Rumors are already circulating. The team’s ability to save tough shots has dropped to the worst in the league lately. If they can’t have better performances from the goalies, even superstar Connor McDavid’s scoring won’t be enough to push them far in the playoffs.
Bowman is facing challenges with limited budget space, especially after recently bringing in a few veteran players.
The countdown is on for the deadline on Friday at 3:00 PM. If the current goalie duo doesn’t step up in their game against the Ottawa Senators tomorrow, you can bet that Bowman will make a big change for the team.
The situation is obvious; the Oilers are not going to wait around any longer with their goalies. It’s now or never for the goalies to prove themselves.
