Darnell Nurse trade chatter hits Edmonton, and it feels real now

Darnell Nurse trade rumors have reached the Edmonton Oilers, and things are serious because his no-movement clause is a big obstacle.

David Pagnotta mentioned something interesting in his notes right before the trade deadline. He said that Edmonton has at least talked about the chance of trading Nurse.

This doesn’t mean a trade is happening soon. It does show that they are thinking about it more than usual.

The important thing here is that any trade has to start with Nurse saying it’s okay since he has a no-movement clause.

“Just to let you know, the Edmonton Oilers have talked about possibly trading Darnell Nurse. I can’t say how serious those talks were, but he’s a name to keep an eye on this summer, with that no-movement clause in play,” said David Pagnotta.

The reason this is significant is because of the salary cap. Nurse has a cap hit of $9.25 million, and that goes until 2029-30.

On the ice, Nurse is still playing a lot of minutes. In 64 games, he has 7 goals and 13 assists for 20 points, which is decent, but people are always debating his contract versus what he brings to the team.

Darnell Nurse and the Edmonton Oilers salary cap trouble

Oilers fans are fed up with the same story: they have great players up front but get nervous every time the defense struggles.

If Edmonton even considers this move, it’s not only about defense; it’s about managing the team’s budget. Trading Nurse could create space for someone who can make a big difference, or help with their goalie situation.

But the details are complicated. The trade includes the no-movement clause, and in later years, there’s a list of ten teams to which he can’t be traded, so there isn’t a lot of flexibility in the future.

There’s also the personal aspect. Nurse has been part of this team for a long time, and talking to him about waiving his clause isn’t an easy chat.
Another important factor is timing. This is a story that happens when the season is over, as teams can make bolder moves when they are not worried about daily salary cap limits.

Even Jeff Marek was curious about it during discussions around the trade deadline, which shows that people in the league are at least talking about it quietly.

For now, it’s pretty straightforward. If the Oilers want to improve their defense, this is the biggest option they have, but it’s also the toughest one to pull off.
