All 10 current and former Oilers representing their country at Olympics

The Edmonton Oilers are taking 3 players with them, but we will also have 7 old Oilers playing in the tournament this year.

Connor McDavid, Leon Draisaitl, and Josh Samanski are the 3 active Oilers in Milan for the Olympics. Other current Oilers like Evan Bouchard, Zach Hyman, and Mattias Ekholm were surprising choices not to be included.

Among the former Oilers, there are a few that are not well known, along with some players that fans might recognize from their time in Edmonton.

David Tomasek started this season with the Oilers but will now be playing for the Czech team. He appeared in 22 games and got 6 points, which showed he had skill but didn’t get much of a chance from Coach Knoblauch. Tomasek decided to leave the team and returned to the SHL, where he currently has 11 points in 11 games.

Philip Broberg is still a well-known player connected to the Oilers. Now playing for the Blues, he just signed a new 6-year contract.

Dominik Kahun and Tobias Rieder will join Samanski and Draisaitl on Team Germany. Kahun played 48 games with the Oilers during the 2020-21 season and had a good season with 15 points, but he later left the NHL to play in Switzerland.

Tobias Rieder had a tough season with the Oilers in 2018-19, where he didn’t score any goals and ended up with 11 points in 67 games. After the Oilers missed the playoffs, the CEO at the time, Bob Nicholson, blamed Rieder for the team’s struggles. Nicholson later apologized, but Rieder was traded to Calgary.

Marty Marincin was picked by the Oilers in the second round of the draft back in 2010. He played parts of 2 seasons in Edmonton before being traded to Toronto for Brad Ross and a 4th round draft pick. Marincin played 227 NHL games before returning to the Czech League in the 2021-22 season.

The two least known players on the list are Yohann Auvitu from France and Patrick Russell from Denmark. Auvitu played 33 games with Edmonton in the 2017-18 season before moving to the KHL. Russell spent part of 3 seasons with the Oilers from 2018 to 2021, but only played in 59 games before leaving the NHL.

Most Oilers fans will likely be cheering for Team Canada in the Olympics, but it will also be exciting to see some old Oilers on the ice during the tournament.
