He definitely had some drinks in him, that’s certain. Listen to Brady explain how everything went down.
Winning a gold medal at the Olympics is usually a time for joy. But for Brady Tkachuk, it almost turned into something else.
On his podcast with his brother Matthew Tkachuk, the captain of the Ottawa Senators talked about how his plans for celebrating after winning gold changed quickly after Team USA beat Canada in Milano Cortina.
“I got pulled aside after the game,” Brady mentioned, thinking back to it. “I was like, ‘Heck yeah, let’s go enjoy some beers and celebrate,’ then someone tapped me on the shoulder. ‘Hey Brady, it’s time for your drug test.’”
While some of his teammates were already heading off to have fun in the locker room, Tkachuk faced a different kind of stress—he needed to give a sample so he could join the celebration.
“I felt the pressure of needing to pee so I could go party,” he chuckled. “Two other guys went right away… but I didn’t want to miss a single second. ”
He knew he had to drink a lot quickly.
Tkachuk said he chugged down five beers, three Powerades, and two waters in about 40 minutes. The test needed 90 milliliters from him, or he would have to wait and try again.
With the bus about to leave, he decided to take a risk.

“Ten minutes before the bus, I thought, ‘Forget it, I need to take a chance,’ and I did. Thank goodness. ”
If he had missed the bus and the party, he said he would have been really upset.
Gold medal achieved. Test completed successfully. Celebration still on.
It wasn’t the type of Olympic moment fans anticipated, but it definitely fits Brady Tkachuk’s style.
