Connor Murphy won’t be playing tonight, and fans of the Edmonton Oilers are feeling stressed as the trade deadline approaches.
The Oilers just traded for a player to help them, but now they have to see him sit in the press box for one game.
Jason Gregor shared that Murphy is not taking the ice tonight for Edmonton and will arrive later today.
This is important because the Oilers are facing Ottawa at Rogers Place on Tuesday, and these are the points they need to collect before the tough part of the season begins.
Edmonton’s record is 29 wins, 24 losses, and 8 overtime losses, and they have little room for mistakes.
The trade is simple: Connor Murphy is coming from Chicago in exchange for a second-round draft pick in 2028, and Chicago is covering half of his salary of 4.4 million dollars.
This salary covering is essential because it allows Edmonton to add a solid player without disrupting the rest of the team.
Connor Murphy will help the Oilers defense.
Fans are happy, but they are also fed up with how shaky the defense gets when the game gets close.
Murphy is 32 years old and was the 20th pick in the first round of the 2011 draft by the Phoenix Coyotes. He has played 805 games in the NHL.
So far this season, he has scored 4 goals and made 9 assists in 60 games, and the Oilers are not bringing him in to improve their power play.
They want him to stop the opposing team, kill penalties, and help out whoever has to defend when they are trying to protect a lead.
His time in Chicago shows that he was their leading defenseman for blocked shots and minutes played while shorthanded.
Edmonton also sent Isaac Howard to Bakersfield in a related move, so they are already making changes to stay under the salary cap.
For this game, the current defense pairs have to step up, and the Oilers need to find a way to defeat Ottawa without their new player.
The real challenge begins in the next game when Murphy can move up into the top four and give the other players some room to relax.
