Ex-49ers DE Attempting NFL Comeback With Dolphins After 4 Years Away

The Miami Dolphins’ rookie minicamp this week is set to feature an unexpected face: 31-year-old defensive end Aaron Lynch.

Lynch’s journey to this point has been anything but ordinary. Despite twice retiring from the NFL, with his last appearance in a game dating back to the 2020 season, he’s now striving for a comeback. Securing a tryout at Miami’s rookie minicamp signals his determination to reignite his football career. Notably, Lynch stands alone as the lone veteran amidst the fresh faces of the rookie class as the minicamp commenced on May 10.

Initially drafted by the San Francisco 49ers in the fifth round of the 2014 NFL Draft, Lynch showcased promise early in his career before embarking on a series of team changes. Adam Stites of USA Today’s Dolphins Wire points out Lynch’s impactful start with the 49ers, where he amassed 15 sacks over four seasons. His journey continued as a free agent signing with the Chicago Bears in 2018, contributing five sacks over two seasons. Lynch’s football odyssey took another turn when he joined the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2020.

Now, as he steps onto the field at Miami’s minicamp, Lynch’s presence serves as a testament to resilience and the enduring pursuit of a passion for the game.

Lynch’s journey in professional football has seen its twists and turns. Initially retiring during the Jaguars’ training camp ahead of the 2020 season, he surprised many by returning and featuring in eight games that year. While he hasn’t been in action since then, Lynch has been diligently working towards a comeback, even earning a tryout with the Cleveland Browns in March.

During his hiatus from the NFL, Lynch underwent a remarkable transformation, shedding weight and transitioning positions. Previously a 6’5, 285-pound defensive end with the Jaguars, he now finds himself listed as a 6’5, 260-pound linebacker on the Dolphins’ rookie minicamp roster, as highlighted by Stites.

As the Dolphins’ minicamp kicked off, much of the spotlight naturally fell on Chop Robinson, the team’s recent first-round draft pick. With established edge rushers Bradley Chubb and Jaelan Phillips returning from injuries, Robinson is poised to play a significant role in the team’s defensive setup.

Addressing reporters, Robinson emphasized his focus on staying grounded amidst the expectations surrounding him. He stressed the importance of humility, confidence, and hard work as he embarks on his NFL journey.

For Robinson, the start of minicamp feels somewhat surreal, marking his first tangible step into professional football since being drafted. While he anticipates the reality to sink in during the summer break, for now, his primary focus remains on putting in the work.

Acknowledging the pressure to match the standards set by seasoned players like Chubb and Phillips, Robinson expressed admiration for their consistency and determination. Having followed their careers since his high school days, he’s determined to pursue greatness, mirroring their commitment to excellence.
