Former Oiler signs AHL tryout contract, fighting to continue hockey career

Former Oiler Travis Dermott has signed a tryout contract with the Hartford Wolf Pack, which is part of the New York Rangers, to keep playing hockey.

Dermott started last season with the Oilers and played 10 games before he was put on waivers. The Minnesota Wild picked him up, and he played 9 games there before being waived again.

The Oilers got Dermott back after he was placed on waivers, but he only played 3 more games for the AHL team, the Bakersfield Condors. This offseason, he did not get any contract offers, and it seemed like his career in the NHL might be over.

Today, the Wolf Pack announced that Dermott would be joining them for an AHL tryout.

This season, the Rangers have a weak defense, so if things go well for Dermott, there is a real chance he could play in the NHL again.

After not getting signed during the offseason, it came out that Dermott had some serious injuries last year. It took him extra time to recover and get back into playing shape, and only recently were people informed that he wanted to keep playing.

At times during his career, Dermott has been a solid defenseman who can be in the top 6, and he is still only 29 years old. However, things did not work out for him in Edmonton, and even Paul Coffey mentioned him directly.

The Oilers probably weren’t interested in bringing Dermott back because they already have too many left-shot defensemen.

Even though he isn’t trying to get back on the Oilers, fans still hope he recovers from his injury and finds his way back to the NHL.
