Kris Knoblauch has the toughest job in hockey. He needs to win a Stanley Cup right away, or Connor McDavid might leave the team.
On Monday night, TSN’s Pierre LeBrun shocked everyone connected to the Oilers. He shared some big news about the best player in the world.
Back in October, McDavid signed a two-year deal worth $25 million. Many fans thought this team-friendly deal meant everything would be calm in Edmonton for the next while.
However, LeBrun shared a very different view when he spoke on OverDrive. He indicated that this new contract was actually a serious warning for the team’s management.
“Even though Connor McDavid signed a two-year extension, it felt to me like he put the Oilers on alert,” LeBrun said.
He didn’t stop there. The insider gave fans a scary thought to consider.
“Just because he signed a two-year extension, it doesn’t mean he has to play out that two years in Edmonton. ”
These words were quite impactful. The pressure on the organization is extremely high as they approach spring.
Oilers facing an important trade deadline
Throughout his NHL career, McDavid has done everything that has been asked of him. Right now, he is leading the offense with 103 points in 61 games.
His performance is still top-notch. He has already scored 35 goals and added 68 assists this season, carrying the team on his back every game.
But, the defense behind him continues to be a big problem. The defensive line has looked weak and out of sync during the recent home games.
You cannot waste MVP-level seasons and expect him to stay loyal forever. If the players around him keep failing to score in crucial moments, it will only lead to more frustration.

Stan Bowman just made a trade to bring Connor Murphy into the team to strengthen the defense. However, this one change won’t solve the problems with the penalty killing team.
The Oilers are really under pressure now. The management needs to make the team better at moving the puck and find dependable players before the playoffs start.
If this playoff run ends in more disappointment, no contract will make him stay here. McDavid is looking for a championship ring, and Edmonton only has a few months to show they can get one.
