Lakers’ LeBron James a Target for West ‘Superteam’ Despite $50 Million Pay Cut: Report

Throughout LeBron James’ illustrious two-decade NBA career, one thing has remained consistent: he maximizes his earnings under the collective bargaining agreement.

Known for his meticulous contract negotiations, James’ reputation for financial prudence, humorously depicted in his movie “Trainwreck” where he is seen counting change, holds true in real life.

However, a recent report from NBA reporter Evan Sidery of Forbes and Sporting News has raised eyebrows. The Phoenix Suns are reportedly planning to pitch James the idea of joining Kevin Durant, Devin Booker, and Bradley Beal as a free agent this summer. This proposition entails James opting out of the final year of his contract, worth $51 million, and passing up a potential three-year, $164 million deal with the Lakers to sign with the Suns for a mere $3.3 million.

An intriguing aspect of the Suns’ pitch involves James’ son, Bronny, who has declared for the 2024 NBA draft. While Bronny may not possess first-round talent, his famous last name could make him a valuable draft choice for the Suns. The strategy involves drafting Bronny at No. 22 overall to entice LeBron to join the team.

“The Suns are seriously considering drafting Bronny James to lure LeBron to Phoenix, forming a superteam with Durant, Booker, and Beal,” Sidery reports. “LeBron would need to forfeit nearly $50 million next season, and subsequently miss out on a substantial contract, to play for the veteran’s minimum with the Suns.”

The financial sacrifice for James would be substantial, forfeiting closer to $164 million over three years with the Lakers.

A more plausible threat to the Lakers could come from the Philadelphia 76ers. With cap space to sign James outright this summer, the Sixers, who hold the 16th pick in this year’s draft, could potentially trade down to select Bronny, making an attractive offer to LeBron.

Despite the speculations, James has expressed his desire to finish his career with the Lakers. Although rumors will continue to swirl, the likelihood of James accepting a minimum deal in Phoenix remains slim.
