The Vegas Golden Knights have let go of Bruce Cassidy from his role as head coach and have brought in John Tortorella instead. Now, fans are making fun of the Golden Knights for this choice.
The Golden Knights have only won one out of their last seven matches. On Sunday, the team decided to let Cassidy go.
Vegas lets go of Bruce Cassidy
Cassidy joined the team for the 2022-23 season after they didn’t make the playoffs the year before. In his first season, he helped the Golden Knights win the Stanley Cup and has made them seen as serious competitors since then. However, the team has been having a tough time recently and is only four points ahead of the Los Angeles Kings, who are just below the playoff line in the Western Conference.
With only eight games left in the regular season, the Golden Knights are now relying on John Tortorella. Tortorella last coached the Philadelphia Flyers but was dismissed in March 2025.

Tortorella won the Stanley Cup with the Tampa Bay Lightning in 2004 and is the ninth-best coach in NHL history with 770 wins.
“We think a change is needed for us to play at the level that’s expected of our team. With John Tortorella, we are bringing in a Stanley Cup winner and one of the most experienced and respected coaches in the NHL. His leadership will be a big help for our team during this important time in the season,” said Golden Knights general manager Kelly McCrimmon in a statement to NHL.com.
Fans poke fun at the team
Fans online are now joking about the new hire. Tortorella is known in the hockey community for being very lively and outspoken as a coach.
“I seriously had to check the date to see if it was April 1,” one fan commented on X.
“This is going to be really funny when they miss the playoffs now,” another person said.
“Letting go of a coach who won the Stanley Cup while the team is still in playoff contention… that’s an interesting decision,” a third added.
“How many more games until Tortorella makes Marner upset? ” a fourth questioned.
The Golden Knights will play their next match against the Vancouver Canucks.
