The Edmonton Oilers have brought in experienced forward Jason Dickinson to join head coach Kris Knoblauch and his team just before the NHL trade deadline.
Dickinson comes over from the Chicago Blackhawks along with Colton Dach. Edmonton gave up a conditional first-round draft pick in 2027 and forward Andrew Mangiapane in the deal.
Even though it was a big cost, it is totally worth it. Dickinson provides the kind of defensive strength that this team needs as they head toward the end of the season. This could really help them when the playoffs begin.
He has 13 points in 47 games this year, showing he can be consistent with scoring. However, his biggest value is in how well he plays defense.
Chicago is covering half of his $4.25 million salary cap hit, which means his $2.125 million cost is an excellent deal for a team trying to win.
During his time in Chicago, he played a lot on the penalty kill. He was usually fourth among their forwards for the amount of time spent shorthanded on the ice.
At 30 years old, this center knows what he needs to do. After the trade, he said, “I understand my role and I’m ready to fulfill it.”

In his NHL career, Dickinson has participated in 549 regular-season games. Throughout this time, he has scored 74 goals and achieved a total of 168 points.
These statistics show that he has been consistent over time. He offers immediate support as a third-line center who will face the toughest defensive assignments every game.
Standing at 6 feet 2 inches tall, he uses his size to win physical confrontations. His height and reach make it very challenging to play against him along the boards.
Even Connor McDavid remarked about how difficult it is to play against Dickinson in faceoffs. Now, those two rivals are on the same team.
He has played 40 intense playoff games before. In 2020, he made it to the Stanley Cup Final with the Dallas Stars.
