Oilers make major change with AHL goalies, hinting at big decision coming

With another victory for Condors’ goalie Connor Ungar, the Oilers’ front office might be rearranging things to help him start in the NHL.

Young goalie earning his spot on the team

Honestly, I’m not sure what shocks me more about Ungar’s journey so far: his amazing AHL record of 8 wins, 1 loss, and 4 ties, with a 1.76 goals against average and a . 946 save percentage, or the fact that this 24-year-old was never picked in the draft before the Oilers signed him in March 2024.

He has been impressive no matter where he played or at what level. Now, he’s making a strong argument to be the next goalie to join the Oilers if either Jarry or Ingram gets hurt or doesn’t play well.

Some might say Pickard is a better option on the team; however, where he stands after clearing waivers is unclear, and honestly, he hasn’t performed well enough for Edmonton this season, even with several chances.

On the other hand, Ungar seems to excel in uncertain situations, turning what is unknown into something clear for the Oilers’ management.

At the start of the 2025-26 season, Edmonton’s goalie prospects were trying to find places to play, which led to Ungar playing for three different ECHL teams and doing really well on each one.

When Ingram got the opportunity to play in Edmonton due to Jarry’s injury, it opened up a spot in Bakersfield for Ungar, who is now excelling there as well.

His future is evident. Connor Ungar wants to wear an Oilers jersey and contribute to the team. If he keeps going like this, he definitely will.

Bakersfield is going to face the Ontario Reign in a two-game series on Friday and Saturday. Ungar will play in one of these games, where he aims to keep up his great performance.
