Phoenix Suns Targeting Bronny James, LeBron James in Free Agency–But There’s a Big Problem

The Phoenix Suns are reportedly aiming to sign LeBron James in free agency by drafting his son, Bronny James. However, convincing the NBA’s all-time leading scorer to join at a lower salary might be challenging.

Last offseason, the Suns traded Chris Paul for Bradley Beal from the Washington Wizards. The idea was to enhance their offense by pairing Beal with Devin Booker and Kevin Durant, creating a formidable trio.

Despite the promising strategy, the execution fell short. The Suns ended the season sixth in the Western Conference with a 49-33 record. Offensively, they ranked ninth, and defensively, they were 13th out of 30 NBA teams.

A significant disappointment was their first-round playoff sweep by the Minnesota Timberwolves, led by Anthony Edwards. Despite their offensive talent, Phoenix failed to secure a single win in the series. This led to the firing of head coach Frank Vogel and left the Suns with an expensive yet underperforming roster.

Addressing their issues, the Suns hired Mike Budenholzer as Vogel’s replacement and explored other improvements. One proposal, highlighted by Evan Sidery on X, involves acquiring both LeBron James and his son Bronny.

While drafting Bronny is feasible, signing LeBron on a veteran’s minimum contract poses difficulties. From LeBron’s perspective, joining Durant, Booker, and Beal might not promise success, and Phoenix might be less appealing compared to Los Angeles or Cleveland.

If the Suns can create cap space and offer LeBron a more competitive salary, there could be a chance for him and Bronny to play together in Phoenix. However, any decisions regarding James’ free agency will be clearer after the NBA Draft at the end of June.
