Red Sox to promote infield prospect Tyler Miller to Double-A Portland

The Red Sox have announced the promotion of corner infield prospect Tyler Miller from High-A Greenville to Double-A Portland, as reported by Chase Ford of MiLB Central.

Miller, who is 24 years old, has been with Greenville since the beginning of the 2023 season. Over his first 36 games this year, he posted a batting line of .275/.321/.450, including nine doubles, one triple, four home runs, and 17 RBIs. He also scored 16 runs, drew nine walks, and struck out 28 times across 140 plate appearances. His performance was notably stronger against right-handed pitchers, against whom he slashed .313/.365/.552, compared to a .171/.194/.171 line against left-handers.

In the South Atlantic League, among 78 qualified hitters, Miller ranks 23rd in strikeout rate (20 percent) and OPS (.771), 17th in batting average and slugging percentage, 21st in isolated power (.176), 20th in line-drive rate (26 percent), 28th in swinging-strike rate (10.7 percent), and 30th in wRC+ (119), according to FanGraphs.

Defensively, Miller has divided his time between first and third base in 2024, with 18 starts at first base and 16 at third for Greenville. During this period, he committed six errors in 211 total chances. Additionally, he has some experience in all three outfield positions.

Drafted by the Red Sox in the ninth round of the 2021 amateur draft out of Auburn, Miller signed for $157,800. Since then, he has accumulated a career slash line of .252/.313/.400 with 29 homers and 61 RBIs in 268 games (1,106 plate appearances) across various minor-league levels. Currently, SoxProspects.com does not rank him among the top 60 prospects in Boston’s farm system.

Miller’s promotion to Portland is timely, as the Sea Dogs need additional depth at first and third base following Blaze Jordan’s injury, which has sidelined him since May 12. Besides Jordan, only Alex Binelas has played both corner infield positions for the Sea Dogs this year.

Miller, who will turn 25 in December, is the first position player from Greenville’s 2024 Opening Day roster to be promoted to Portland. According to SoxProspects.com’s Chris Hatfield, Miller’s spot on the Sea Dogs’ roster was made available by the release of reliever Cody Scroggins.
