Recently, it has been reported that the American Women’s Hockey team, who won a gold medal, has turned down an invitation from President Donald Trump to visit the White House.
The president invited the team for his State of the Union speech on Tuesday, but today the team let him know they cannot come.
A representative from the team told NBC News’ Monica Alba that the players, who won their gold medal at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Italy, are “truly thankful” for the honor, but they cannot attend “because of the schedule and earlier arrangements for school and work. ”
Trump also invited the U. S. men’s hockey team, but it is not clear if those players can make it to the event.
One might wonder if Trump’s remarks about the women’s team during his call with the men influenced their choice to skip the event.
If you didn’t catch it, Trump had a conversation with the men’s team in their locker room after they won gold. He used a speakerphone and mentioned he had to invite the women’s team because if he didn’t, “he might get impeached. ”

He stated, “I must tell you, we need to include the women’s team, do you understand that? I really think I would probably be impeached if I didn’t.”
Clearly, Trump is just making a joke with a comment like that, but it hasn’t prevented some drama from starting. Some people online are guessing that this remark is why the women’s team turned down Trump’s invitation, but let’s be honest. The truth is that these women have their own lives and jobs to return to, and, as they mentioned in their statement, they appreciate the invite but really can’t figure out the details to make it happen.
