The Edmonton Oilers faced a big setback with their team. Coach Kris Knoblauch announced that Mattias Janmark will not play for the rest of the season.
The 33-year-old player had surgery on his shoulder and won’t be back for the rest of the regular games or the playoffs. However, he is expected to be ready for the training camp next fall.
Janmark tried to keep playing despite the pain last week. He had to leave the game after playing only 2 minutes and 30 seconds against the Anaheim Ducks and didn’t come back.
It’s tough to see an experienced player struggle during an important playoff season. Janmark is well-liked in the locker room and always gives his best effort every time he plays.
The team counts on him for their defense. He is a key player during penalties and usually performs well when defending in his area.
But the tough 82-game NHL schedule takes a toll on players. Playing a tough, defensive role can wear down anyone over time.
On the bright side, there is a financial benefit. Putting his $1.45 million salary on Long-Term Injured Reserve helps Edmonton save money right away.
Now, the management has more room to look for upgrades in their lower lines. They are likely to actively seek a tough forward before the trade deadline passes.
Janmark has been an important player for the Oilers in the playoffs.
Mattias Janmark has had surgery – shoulder we suspect – and will be ready for training camp next fall” according to Kris Knoblauch.

In terms of scoring, his numbers show he was mainly used for defense. For the 2025-26 season, Janmark ended with one goal and seven assists in 43 games.
With 24 shots on goal and an average of 11 minutes and 51 seconds of ice time, his scoring was held back on purpose. He also had a minus-8 rating for the year.
During his time in the NHL, the player from Sweden has been the perfect example of a trustworthy team member. He takes on the hard duties so the main players can take a break.
Not being able to play in the upcoming playoffs is really disappointing. He is someone who usually thrives in the intense and close games of the playoffs.
The defensemen and the goalies will definitely feel the absence of his help in returning to defense as the team prepares for an important set of home games this weekend.
The management needs to move quickly to find a new player to fill that gap. A new player should be ready in the lineup before they play against their next rival in the division.
