The Oilers have a $9M problem Stan Bowman can’t ignore this summer

Darnell Nurse has turned into the biggest issue for Kris Knoblauch this summer, and Stan Bowman can’t keep delaying the decision on that contract.

The trade deadline has passed, so this isn’t just a spring topic anymore.

Now it’s something that the Edmonton team has to deal with over the summer, and Bowman needs to act accordingly.

Nurse has a contract that costs 9,250,000 against the cap for the 2025-2026 season, and it’s hard to justify that amount since he only has 21 points and a -16 rating after 68 games.

That’s not worth the money for a team that’s trying to make the most of Connor McDavid’s remaining chances to win.

Edmonton’s record is 33-26-9, giving them 75 points. This shows they are in the race for the playoffs, but it also means they can’t afford any costly mistakes on defense.

This is where Bowman has to act fast. Not next winter. Not after starting slow again. It needs to happen this summer.

The tricky part is clear. Nurse’s contract can’t just be traded without any adjustments, so Edmonton will probably need to offer some future assets to get another team to absorb it completely.

That’s why a team like Vancouver seems like a reasonable option to talk to.

The Canucks have a record of 20-38-8, and if Patrik Allvin wants to gather future assets while Adam Foote changes the team, Edmonton might suggest trading a first-round pick along with a prospect to help get rid of this contract.

Clearing cap space changes everything.

The goal of trading Nurse isn’t just to accept that his season hasn’t gone well. It’s to free up money for better team organization.

Edmonton already has Evan Bouchard with a cap hit of 10,500,000, and Nurse is still at 9,250,000.

That’s a huge amount of the budget tied up in one area of the defense.
Bowman’s best selling point within the team is net. Sergei Bobrovsky’s current deal finishes after the 2025-2026 season, and he costs 10 million against the salary cap.

If he becomes available, Edmonton should definitely consider him. Even if Bobrovsky isn’t the perfect solution, the idea still makes sense.

Gaining cap space from a Nurse trade gives Edmonton a real chance to go after a top goalie instead of just fixing things for now.

That’s why this shouldn’t be seen as a fancy decision. It’s really about fixing the team.

Nurse has 100 minutes in penalties, hasn’t scored any power-play goals, and his contract is still too big for the role Edmonton needs him to fill now.

Bowman didn’t make this contract, but he is responsible for the next choice.

If he wants to give McDavid, Draisaitl and Knoblauch a better-balanced team in October, Darnell Nurse has to be one of the summer’s biggest calls.
