Defenseman Connor Murphy and head coach Kris Knoblauch will have to wait a little longer to come together because travel issues have pushed back his debut with the Edmonton Oilers on Tuesday.
This morning, the team announced that the new defenseman won’t be playing in the important game against the Senators tonight. It turned out to be too tough to get him across the border.
Currently, Edmonton has 66 points and is in fourth place in the Pacific Division. Every match is crucial as they try to secure a good spot for the playoffs.
Even though he won’t be playing tonight, the team has shown off his new jersey. Murphy will wear number 5 for the Oilers from now on.
This number has some recent significance in the Edmonton locker room since it was last worn by dependable veteran Cody Ceci before he left the team.
Throughout his career in the NHL, Murphy has mostly worn number 5. Sticking with a number he knows should help him adjust quickly to a new defensive setup.
Strengthening the Defense for the Final Push
General manager Stan Bowman went after the experienced right-shot defender to reinforce the third pair. The Oilers had to give up a second-round draft pick in 2028 for the trade.
In 60 games this season, the 32-year-old has scored a modest 13 points. However, his real worth is in his defensive skills.
He provides toughness and a strong physical presence on the defense. His effective work on the penalty kill is just what this team competing for the Stanley Cup really needs at the moment.
Knoblauch’s job now is to smoothly fit him into the team’s style of play. The defense has been having a hard time recently, giving up too many dangerous scoring chances during a tough stretch.
Edmonton has lost five out of their last six matches. They really need a big boost to get back to how they were playing at the start of the season and keep their passing sharp in the middle of the ice.
Look for Murphy to finally join the starting team later this week when they go on the road. The coaches want him to play a lot right away, focusing on shutting down the other team as soon as he arrives.
For tonight’s game, the players on the roster need to perform well without their newest member. The other defense players have to protect the goal and manage their entries carefully to win at home.
