The Oilers to address big needs at the deadline

The trade deadline is approaching at Rogers Place, creating a lot of tension. Head coach Kris Knoblauch and his team understand exactly what improvements they need to make on defense.

The problems with defense have been a big issue this season. It’s clear that Edmonton is looking for a dependable player to strengthen their defense line.

So far, they have played 61 games and allowed 203 goals. That number is too high if they want to succeed in the playoffs.

Even though the offense is doing great with 215 goals scored, the defense continues to struggle and cause worry. In the playoffs, you cannot just count on scoring more points to cover up errors.

Insiders Bob Stauffer and Elliotte Friedman have been mentioning this issue for weeks. The team’s management isn’t just browsing; they are seriously searching for a 4th or 5th defenseman to complete their defensive lineup.

The team really needs a player who can provide reliability in moving the puck. As it stands, they are giving up too many dangerous scoring chances.

The Challenge of Finances

Figuring out how to manage the budget is a significant issue. Since there is very little cap space available, getting creative with finances is essential.

Andrew Mangiapane has been mentioned as a potential player to trade, and he was put on waivers today.

Getting rid of some salary is the only way to add a good defensive player.

During this time of year, the demand for defensemen is always high. Every team aiming for the championship wants a strong player who can handle a lot of playing time.

The management needs to decide what they are ready to give up. Is it going to be a high draft pick? An excellent young player? They have a great chance to win right now, which often leads to a bold strategy.
The team has been going downhill recently. Changing the defensive pairings could be just what they need to get back on track.

Adding an experienced player who plays tough would change the team’s identity. It would improve the penalty kill and help lessen the pressure on the top defensive pair.

They can’t afford to wait for players to improve on their own. The playoffs won’t delay for them to develop good teamwork.

If they don’t bring in a strong player, they could run into big problems against the tough teams from the West.

They need to make a move right away. Staying quiet isn’t a choice.
