Tiger Woods says his body is strong enough to win at US Open

Tiger Woods, who has faced significant challenges walking 72 holes since his severe leg injuries from a 2021 car accident, expressed confidence on June 11 that his body is ready to compete and potentially win this week’s US Open in Pinehurst.

The 15-time major winner has encountered difficulties maintaining stamina in the later rounds of major tournaments. However, he has spent the past week at Pinehurst focusing on his fitness in preparation for the 124th US Open.

“I feel like I have the strength to do it. It’s just a matter of execution,” Woods said about his chances this week.

“This golf course will challenge every aspect of your game, especially mentally. The discipline required here is immense,” he added. “We’ve been working on understanding the game plan and being prepared.”

Woods, whose last major victory was at the 2019 Masters, was granted a special exemption by the US Golf Association (USGA) to participate in this week’s event.

Since his car crash, Woods made his return at the 2022 Masters, finishing 47th. This year, he placed 60th at the Masters but has also withdrawn from two tournaments and missed the cut twice.

“Fitness has always been a priority,” Woods noted.

This marks Woods’ first US Open since missing the cut in 2020. He also missed the 2014 US Open at Pinehurst due to back surgery recovery.

“I worked on my chipping and putting, but nothing quite prepares you for the unique challenges here,” Woods explained. “The small shots, knobs, and run-offs require precise use of wedges, long irons, woods, or even putters around the greens.”

Woods predicted a challenging course setup, referencing the 2005 US Open. “I anticipate some ‘ping pong’ back and forth among players. The leading score might be as low as it gets after the first day,” he said.
