When Tom Wilson and Pierre Crinon fought during the Canada-France game, people thought both players would get suspended. Fighting isn’t allowed under IIHF rules.
But when Crinon, from France, hit Canada’s star player Nathan MacKinnon, everyone knew Wilson would react, even if it meant he might get in trouble.
No suspensions given after Wilson-Crinon fight
Although both players were kicked out of the game for misconduct during Canada’s big win of 10-2, the IIHF decided that neither player needed any extra punishment.
WILSON: I think he realized that we would respond to protect our teammates. I didn’t expect it to turn into a fight, but it quickly became one. It felt more like wrestling and a chaotic situation. I wanted to keep it under control since there are more important games ahead. I think they understood that we are united as a team.
RISHAUG: So, regarding the choice to not let him keep playing in the tournament, what do you think about that?
WILSON: I’m not sure. There’s probably a lot of factors involved; I’m not familiar with their league and federation. I’m focused on this team and making sure everyone knows I’ll do anything to win for them. Hearing the news this morning was surprising, but I don’t think it’s my place to express my views.
However, it seems like Team France decided to take it a step further and suspended Crinon despite what the IIHF decided.
Canada’s next game is on February 18 against the winner of the match between Slovakia and Denmark today.
