During a recent episode of a podcast on SDPN, host Steve Dangle Glynn suggested a trade between the Leafs and the Oilers that has fans in Edmonton feeling outraged.
At first, it’s not hard to understand why over 60% of Oilers’ fans said no to the trade, based on a poll shared on social media.
McMann is 29 years old and scored 34 points in 74 games last season. It’s easy to get distracted by all the parts of the trade.
However, McMann has shown that he can reliably score more than 20 goals, which is highly valued in the NHL.
Who says no?

The player from Alberta scored 15 and 20 goals in the past two seasons and is likely to reach nearly 30 goals this year. How valuable is that for a team that really needs more scoring options?
Another important part of the trade is the salary relief from Mangiapane, which would save Edmonton $3.6 million at the trade deadline. This money could help them bring in another good middle-level forward or a strong defenseman.
When an Oilers’ fan mentioned that offering Mangiapane and four picks (possibly two second-round picks) is too much for a 30-year-old who has only scored 34 points at most in a season, Dangle responded:
“McMann is worth at least what Beauvillier got (a second-round pick) and possibly less than what Sherwood got (two second-round picks). ”
My thinking was McMann on his own is worth at least a 2nd, likely more, based on recent comparable trades. Adding to that the cap relief in the Mangiapane contract, I think this is a fair price for Edmonton. If it’s off, it’s not off by much. https://t.co/Bshfo7kmTn

That’s a fair point; but the trade discussion always comes back to Edmonton wanting to get rid of the often-criticized Mangiapane from their team and salary cap.
Moreover, Stan Bowman needs to address certain areas if the Oilers hope to make the playoffs, which is not guaranteed right now. McMann has an average annual salary of just $1.35 million, so he would only add about $500,000 to the team’s salary cap.
In my view, the sixth-round pick in 2026 and the third-round pick in 2028 are not significant enough to let this deal fall apart.
