Should the former Dodgers All-Star pitcher be signed by the Red Sox?
There is certainly room for improvement in the Boston Red Sox starting rotation’s depth.
Numerous stories have been written on Boston’s starting lineup. It was undoubtedly the club’s biggest problem the previous season and the main reason they missed the playoffs.
Fortunately, Boston still has some choices that may be of assistance. Jordan Montgomery is by far the biggest player remaining available to the Red Sox. Though it’s uncertain if Boston is prepared to pay the required sum to sign him, the team is still connected to him.
It would make sense for the Red Sox to add someone on a cheap deal to support the rear of the rotation if Montgomery is eventually not acquired. The top of the rotation might then be addressed once more by Boston later in the season, perhaps around the trade deadline, depending on the team’s performance.
Six-time All-Star Zack Greinke is one player that might suit this description nicely. Bob Nightengale of USA Today Sports claims that although he isn’t the same guy he once was, he is a veteran who might still be of assistance and is searching for a new chance.
“Zack Greinke, 40, still wants to pitch another season after going 2-15 with a 5.06 ERA last season,” stated Nightengale. “If he makes a comeback, he might become just the twentieth pitcher in history to achieve 3,000 strikeouts. 2,979 strikeouts have been recorded by him in his career.
Greinke had a difficult year in 2023 but a much better year in 2022. At 39 years old, he recorded a 3.68 ERA in 26 starts with Kansas City in 2022. Over the course of his spectacular 20-year career, he has played for the Royals, Milwaukee Brewers, Los Angeles Angels, Los Angeles Dodgers, Arizona Diamondbacks, and Houston Astros.
Greinke is a player Boston may consider bringing in to contend for the No. 5 place in the rotation in the event that the team is unable to acquire a pitcher at the top of the rotation.
