Ex-Red Sox pitcher: Team ‘too smart’ to ‘be down long’

The Red Sox placed last in the American League East the previous two seasons, and their offseason hasn’t produced many announcements that will give supporters much faith that things will be different in 2024.

Former Boston team manager Jon Lester admitted to USA TODAY’s Bob Nightengale that new chief baseball officer Craig Breslow is in “a tough spot” as the new person. Lester won two World Series with the Boston team. However, the former Major League Baseball pitcher thinks his former team will soon be back on track.

Lester said to Nightengale, “It’s hard being the new guy coming in.” “I’m sure things are difficult for Bres. It will definitely take some time for him to adjust. We all know, though, that the Red Sox will rise again soon. There, they are too intelligent.

Certainly, the Red Sox appear to be in a different place than they were under Lester’s leadership. Boston hasn’t made it to the postseason since 2021, even though they were only two games away from winning the World Series. With Tom Werner’s remarks about going “full throttle” this offseason, it seemed like they were going to make a change. However, he then withdrew his statement, acknowledging that it was a bad one, and CEO and President Sam Kennedy disclosed that the payroll in 2024 will probably be smaller than in 2023.

Particularly in the pitching department, the Red Sox still have some gaps to fill. It does not seem as though the team will try to make a run at Jordan Montgomery, despite the fact that he is still available.

Later on in the month, pitchers and catchers report. The Red Sox still have time to make additions, but the fact that a number of AL East teams strengthened their rosters during the summer will make it more difficult for them to contend in an already competitive division.
