Red Sox release former top prospect Gilberto Jimenez

The Red Sox made some roster moves on Sunday, parting ways with six minor-league players, including outfielder Gilberto Jimenez.

Jimenez, 23, had been touted as a promising prospect in the Red Sox organization since signing for a modest sum of $10,000 as an international free agent from the Dominican Republic in 2017.

He quickly made his mark in the Dominican Summer League, showcasing his skills with an impressive .804 OPS in his debut season, earning him recognition as the club’s 2018 Latin Program Position Player of the Year.

Transitioning to the U.S. in 2019, Jimenez continued to impress, leading the New York-Penn League in batting and being named an organizational All-Star by MiLB.com.

However, the disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic hampered Jimenez’s development, and despite a solid showing in the fall instructional league, he struggled to regain momentum in subsequent seasons.

In 2021, Jimenez saw playing time at Low-A Salem but faced challenges in generating power at the plate. His performance didn’t garner enough attention for him to be protected in the Rule 5 draft that winter.

Moving up to High-A Greenville in 2022, Jimenez’s struggles persisted, and injuries limited his playing time in the following season.

Over his tenure with the Red Sox organization, Jimenez showcased versatility in the outfield but failed to advance beyond A-ball, leaving his future in professional baseball uncertain.

Despite his setbacks, Jimenez’s youth and potential may still attract interest from other teams seeking outfield depth in the minors.

In addition to Jimenez, the Red Sox also released right-handers Maceo Campbell and Garrett Ramsey, first baseman C.J. Cron, and infielders Lyonell James and Joe Dunand on Sunday.
