There Is Fear The Chicago Bears Have One Glaring Roster Hole

The Chicago Bears have undertaken a commendable rebuilding effort in the past couple of years, led by GM Ryan Poles, who has bolstered every position with top-tier talent, reminiscent of their glory days around 2019.

With such a revamped roster, playoff contention seems within reach once again. Yet, as with any team, imperfections linger. Among the concerns raised by fans and pundits alike is the need for a formidable edge rusher opposite Montez Sweat, along with a deeper defensive tackle lineup.

However, while the spotlight shines on defensive upgrades, a subtler issue lurks in the background, as highlighted by Aaron Schatz of ESPN: the backup situation behind Caleb Williams. It’s a valid worry. With Tyson Bagent and Brett Rypien boasting a mere eight starts between them, their collective lack of experience and penchant for turnovers raises doubts about their suitability as support for a rookie quarterback.

To address this gap, the Bears must contemplate adding seasoned guidance. While Bagent and Rypien are diligent, they lack the mentorship potential a seasoned veteran could offer Williams. A proven strategy involves enlisting a veteran quarterback capable of imparting invaluable NFL wisdom. Case Keenum’s impact on C.J. Stroud’s rookie success with Houston serves as a pertinent example. Considering Williams’ potential, such guidance could be transformative.

Among the potential candidates, Ryan Tannehill, a former Pro Bowler with extensive starting experience, stands out. While he may aspire to a starting role, his skill set and leadership make him an ideal backup. Alternatively, Brian Hoyer, boasting 16 years in the league and accustomed to supporting star quarterbacks, presents a compelling option. His previous stint in Chicago in 2016 further bolsters his suitability for the role.

Ultimately, the Bears may opt to assess their current setup before committing to changes, with the input of new offensive coordinator Shane Waldron likely to sway their decision. Yet, the prospect of fortifying their quarterback support remains a pressing consideration for a team poised for resurgence.
