One dead and four injured by active shooter at high school hockey game

UPDATE: Officials are now confirming that two people have lost their lives and three others are hurt after a shooting at an arena in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, today.

Two people were killed and several more were hurt in what seems to be a targeted shooting at an ice skating rink in Rhode Island on Monday, according to the authorities.

The shots were fired around 2:30 p.m. at the Dennis M. Lynch Arena in Pawtucket, which is about five miles from Providence, according to Pawtucket Police Chief Tina Goncalves.

In addition to the two deceased, three others who were shot are in serious condition and have been taken to the hospital, the police stated.

The shooting seems to have been intentional and might be linked to a family issue, the chief explained, suggesting it could be the result of a disagreement within a family.

The suspect has died from what appears to be a self-inflicted gunshot, the police reported. The FBI stated that there is “no immediate danger to public safety. ”

The FBI is on the scene and will assist local police with any needed resources, according to a statement from FBI Director Kash Patel.

ABC News also reported that a young girl has died in the incident, and while the injuries of others are not fully known yet, it is believed that four individuals have been taken to the hospital.

Providence Police shared on social media that they were “keeping an eye on the situation in Pawtucket” and that officers were still present to provide help as of 3:44 p.m. local time. The department mentioned that more information would be shared as it becomes available.

Blackstone Valley High School has put out a message about what’s happening right now.

“We know there was a serious incident at Lynch Arena in Pawtucket, where our Boys Hockey team was playing,” the message explained. “We are still getting more details, and we’re working closely with the staff at the event and local police to figure out what’s going on.”

“We learned that several students are safe in different places. Right now, we are trying to confirm where everyone is and their condition,” the message added. “The safety of our students and staff is our top concern, and we are doing everything we can to get the right information quickly. “
