Edmonton Oilers icon Wayne Gretzky found himself in a strange situation that left Team Canada coach Jon Cooper totally shocked.
The big fuss about the recent gold medal game between Canada and the USA is finally starting to make sense today.
Fans were really confused when news came out that the best player in hockey ever was actually not allowed into the Canadian locker room.
You would think a guy with an incredible 2,857 career points would be able to walk into any arena without question.
Insider Elliotte Friedman explained the very frustrating events during his latest TV segment over the weekend.
The Great One reached out himself because he didn’t want people speculating any more, wanting to end this distracting story.
Wayne Gretzky talks about a security mistake.
Gretzky confirmed that Hockey Canada treated his whole family really well during the tough two-week international tournament.
However, there was a big mix-up right before the start of the exciting championship game.
He casually went down to the ice to cheer on the current players, but a strict Olympic security guard didn’t recognize him at all. The guard told him he didn’t have the right ID to be near the tunnel, so he just turned around and quietly left.
“He reached out, and I think he just wanted to end this. I don’t think he wants the story to keep going. He mentioned that he and his family were treated really well by Hockey Canada this week. ”
But what he mentioned was that there had been some sort of mix-up before the Gold Medal Game. He went down to the ice, and a security guard from the IOC didn’t know who Wayne Gretzky was and told him he couldn’t stay, so he just walked away.
Not having that kind of experienced leadership in the locker room right before a big game is tough for any team hoping to win.
You really want his seasoned voice in the room to naturally motivate the players before they take on a strong American team.
Rather than making a big fuss and disturbing everything, he quietly followed the strict venue rules and did not create a mess.
