At the conclusion of a tough and upsetting season for the Toronto Maple Leafs, people are bound to start talking about possible trades that could involve Auston Matthews.
If the Edmonton Oilers do not win the Stanley Cup again, it might lead to conversations about what could happen with Connor McDavid’s career.
Dave Roberts discusses the 2026 season, Ohtani, and other topics.
And if everyone else is making guesses, why not consider this: a trade between the Leafs and Oilers where Matthews and McDavid swap teams.
This doesn’t mean it will definitely happen. It isn’t even saying it’s very likely. It is just a thought to consider for a moment to see if it could happen.
In short, it absolutely could.

How a trade involving Auston Matthews and Connor McDavid could happen
On paper, everything about this trade makes sense if both players agree to it.
Each star has two more years on their contracts, which will end after the 2027-28 season.
Matthews earns $13.25 million each year for the rest of his contract. McDavid will earn $12.5 million annually.
So when it comes to finances, it actually isn’t too complicated.
Figuring out the value and feelings involved could be more challenging.
McDavid is considered the top player in the world, which means that Matthews is not in that position. The Leafs might need to add another player or two along with Matthews to make this trade a reality.
There’s also the effect such a trade could have on the team spirit for both sides. No one can predict how players and fans would react to such a huge deal.
But it might actually be successful. One group might feel more positive about the results compared to the other. Since neither side has achieved the top honor with their present leader, why not begin discussing the possibilities now? It would be tough to find a bigger change than something like this.
