Earlier this season, the general manager Stan Bowman made a bold decision. He traded their goalie Stuart Skinner and solid defender Brett Kulak to the Pittsburgh Penguins in exchange for veteran goalie Tristan Jarry.
The team truly believed that bringing in Jarry would solve their goaltending issues. However, this major trade has since become a serious problem.
Skinner has been performing remarkably well with the Penguins, helping them move up in the standings.
In contrast, Jarry has not been successful in Edmonton. He has been benched multiple times and is still having difficulties making saves, with a low save percentage of under . 890 since the trade.
A Big Goaltending Upgrade Is Necessary
Since the team has a genuine chance to win the Stanley Cup, Edmonton cannot waste the prime years of their best players due to poor goaltending. NHL analyst Pierre McGuire recently proposed a good solution for this obvious issue.
In a discussion on TSN690, McGuire strongly advised that the Oilers should quickly try to acquire superstar goalie Sergei Bobrovsky.
The Florida Panthers have just announced they are ready to trade some of their players after suffering too many losses. They are quite willing to let go of players who will be free agents soon, and Bobrovsky is at the top of that list.
If the Oilers genuinely want to make a strong playoff push and win the Cup this spring, pursuing Bobrovsky would definitely be a wise choice.
Adding an experienced goalie like Bobrovsky, who has plenty of playoff experience, would greatly enhance their defense and allow their scoring players to play more freely.
Even if Bowman doesn’t have a lot of cash right now, it’s really crucial to handle financial problems when a title is on the line.
