Matthew Knies is now being talked about for trades, and with Craig Berube leaving, there’s even more buzz about what Toronto plans to do this summer.
This idea is pretty daring. Toronto would trade Knies to the Chicago Blackhawks in exchange for the No. 4 pick in the 2026 NHL Draft and a few other things.
This rumor gained a lot of attention after David Pagnotta from Daily Faceoff mentioned what the Blackhawks are looking for in the draft and the type of player they want to pair with Connor Bedard.
He said something that sparked discussion: “The Chicago Blackhawks are hoping to get a young forward who is on the right path to become a great teammate for Connor Bedard. They are willing to use the fourth overall pick to make that happen. ”
That statement is important because it directly points to Knies. He is young, strong, and already making an impact, which means he could easily fit alongside Bedard.
From Toronto’s perspective, it makes sense. A trade focused on the fourth pick could give them a chance to grab Gavin McKenna if things go well, while also allowing the Leafs to aim for another top prospect.
Why this trade could change Toronto’s future
However, this trade is complicated. Trading Knies would not just be a regular deal to help the team this season; it would feel like a major change.
Knies offers size, speed, and has value that is hard to find again. Removing him from the team would create a gap in the Leafs’ forward lineup and change their style of play.
The bigger issue is what makes this idea so controversial. Toronto could walk away with some of the best future players, possibly even key pieces for their team in the future, both in defense and offense.
But that future has a price. Trading one of the best young players on the team would show that the Leafs are ready to take a step back before they try to move forward again.
That is hard to explain to fans who want to see results immediately. Supporters can deal with changes. However, they will struggle to accept a decision that makes the team weaker in the near future.
However, if Chicago includes another young player along with the draft pick, this starts to seem less crazy and more like a big risk that Toronto might really think about.
