Jared Bednar and Cale Makar have just received the clearest Avalanche signal to date: Joe Sakic anticipates that Colorado’s top defenseman will retire there.
That line lands because Sakic didn’t leave much space around it. When contract questions begin to emerge, “Cale is going to conclude his career here” is not delicate front-office discussion.
Sakic is also back in charge of the hockey side, which makes a difference. After Chris MacFarland left for Nashville, NHL.com announced that he will continue to serve as general manager for the time being.
So this isn’t an off-the-cuff remark made by a high-ranking official. This is the voice that’s dictating Colorado’s next major contract decision.
Not only is the player involved a key piece, but they are also a key part of the team. Makar concluded the 2025–26 regular season with 20 goals and 79 points in 75 games.
Why any contract discussions around him quickly become heated is because of his output from the blue line. Teams are aware that such players are not available on the market.
Additionally, Colorado is not speaking from a vulnerable stance. Even after a year full of expectation and pressure, the Avalanche completed a season that finished in the Western Conference Final.
