One of Ottawa’s biggest forward moves of the summer is now connected with William Eklund and Travis Green.
Chris Johnston released the report, and it quickly spread over social media: The Senators have purchased Eklund. The most important development is right now. It’s the arrival of a youthful top-six winger, not the full trade tree behind him.
And this isn’t an arbitrary advertisement. Eklund, 23, was the seventh overall selection in 2021 and continues to possess the sort of potential Ottawa required after losing a significant player up front.
His most recent campaign lends the maneuver genuine heft. In 78 games for San Jose in 2025–26, Eklund scored 15 goals and 53 points, indicating that the Senators are acquiring a player who is already productive, not merely a well-known name.
That’s why this feels so critical to Ottawa right now. The Senators aren’t bringing in a bottom-six player. They are signing a gifted winger who has room to improve and can support the assault.
There’s also a schedule that fits. Since Ottawa concluded 44-27-11 with 99 points, this is not a team that is just getting started. After a significant shakeup, it is a team attempting to remain in the battle and maintain its core forward.

This action’s most effective angle is that one. Eklund has 252 NHL games under his belt, but he is young enough that the optimal version of him may not have appeared yet.
For Green, that opens up genuine possibilities. Eklund is a left-shot winger with speed and a touch for playmaking, and Ottawa’s front group was in dire need of another player who can help drive offense rather than just support it.
Generally speaking, his manufacturing trajectory is also going in the correct direction. Prior to his 53 points this season, he had 58 points in 77 games in 2024–2025, so the Senators are getting a player who has already proven he can play in that range.
Since Ottawa is no longer in a quiet market, there will continue to be pressure to move. Every major addition is going to be assessed for impact in light of the noise surrounding Brady Tkachuk and the subsequent changes.
Eklund, however, is logical on the ice. He is young, already established enough to be of assistance at this point, and skillful enough to give Ottawa’s top six a fresh perspective.
Because of this, the Senators consider this to be a serious action. However, he provides Ottawa with a more youthful, quicker, and more creative member precisely when the team needed one. William Eklund doesn’t fix everything by himself.
