One more year or the end, Alex Ovechkin and Spencer Carbery are still awaiting the Caps’ most important phone call of the summer.
A new report states that Ovechkin intends to announce his choice on July 25 in St. Petersburg, rather than before the draft weekend which many in Washington had highlighted.
The environment is important. The announcement is expected around the 2026 Match of the Year, a charity game at SKA Arena starring Russian NHL and KHL celebrities.
Compared to a random offseason rumor, this gives the story greater weight. It also leaves the Capitals trapped in a holding pattern, with their offseason preparations dependent on their captain’s next action.
In the original article, there was an anonymous statement that was the most straightforward: ”
“Alexander Ovechkin will reveal his decision on July 25 in St. Petersburg as part of the ‘2026 Match of the Year’ whether to continue or terminate his NHL career.”
That statement helps to clarify the date, but it doesn’t really resolve the issue. What Ovechkin has been doing since Washington’s season ended may be a more revealing indicator.
Signs during practice still indicate Alex Ovechkin’s comeback.
Ovechkin has spent the first part of the offseason according to the report, playing padel in Russia, working out with trainer Pavel Burlachenko, and skating with other NHL players.
That does not sound like a player closing the door. It sounds like someone is getting their body ready while the last decision awaits the ideal platform.
In a prior interview, Ovechkin’s statements were also cited in the article. This event is almost exactly in line with his expectations for July.
Another line that struck out even more was there. Ovechkin stated that he is “quite confident” that he hasn’t yet played his final NHL game.
Because of this, even if nothing has been formally announced, this still gives the impression that it is gearing towards a comeback. Generally, a player who prepares in this manner is not approaching retirement.
The Capitals may now anticipate a date for the wait. It appears that July 25 will be the day this summer that Alex Ovechkin’s life turns one way or the other.
