Martin St-Louis and Kirby Dach are now in charge since Montreal’s arbitration filing altered the mood around his summer.
This is significant since arbitration immediately removes bid sheets from consideration. When Dach submitted his application, it was no longer a waiting game where every door was open.
Now, the file becomes more focused and compact. Montreal may still resolve prior to a hearing, however the schedule is stricter and a decision on Dach’s future is made sooner.
Because of this, this tale has more impact than a standard RFA action. Dach isn’t some outlier. Despite being 25 years old and shooting right, he remains one of the Canadiens’ limited number of substantial center bodies, standing at 6-foot-4.
The pressure begins in production. Dach ended up with 15 points and eight goals after 37 games in 2025–26. He didn’t score a point in the next ten playoff contests.
There is little incentive for Montreal to make him an easy long-term wager given those numbers. Should the team decide that the fit is no longer ideal, they do give themselves enough latitude to discuss a deal or a brief extension.
In the context of the team, that is even more difficult to ignore. This is not a rebuilding team that can leave every question unanswered indefinitely, as the Canadiens finished 48-24-10 with 106 points.

That’s the true angle. Big right-shot centers don’t come around often, and Dach still has potential. However, once arbitration occurs, the organization must determine if they still consider him to be a solution.
St-Louis already has a core that inspires the space. Cole Caufield had 51 goals, while Nick Suzuki had 101 points. As a newbie, Montreal received 62 points from Ivan Demidov.
That alters how Dach is seen. He is no longer required to be shielded by the notion of what he might evolve into. Now, he must aid and conform to the group that is already in place.
The intelligent interpretation is that this still resolves before a hearing. Due to the parties’ desire to avoid having the whole case brought into a room, arbitration frequently promotes movement.
Even if an agreement is reached shortly, the filing nevertheless conveys something. Kirby Dach’s summer is no longer about vague expectations. It’s about Montreal making a clear decision on a player who has enough size, skill, and ambiguity to make the entire situation uncomfortable.
