Steve Staios wasn’t surprised by Brady Tkachuk’s departure. More than a year prior to the transaction, according to the Senators’ general manager, the red flags appeared.
Ottawa’s entire move seems different as a result. This wasn’t just a swing in the off-season. The front staff has been expecting this scenario for a while.
In one of the summer’s most significant transactions, Tkachuk was traded to the Panthers.
While the Senators got the ninth and twenty-fifth picks in the 2026 draft, a conditional first-round pick in 2029, and a second-round pick in 2027, Florida landed the former captain of Ottawa.
Ottawa also didn’t keep those resources for very long. The rights to sign Brandon Svoboda, Kasper Halttunen, and William Eklund were transferred to San Jose in exchange for the ninth overall pick.

However, the trade return is not the only thing that is receiving attention. People across the league noticed what didn’t occur after Tkachuk was traded.
There wasn’t much of a public response on social media from Senators teammates, in contrast to Josh Norris’ departure earlier this offseason. Questions about the locker room were made even hotter by that quiet.

What Staios acknowledged on Wednesday supports this. They were dealing with more than trade talk if the Senators anticipated this coming that far in advance. They were managing an escalating problem around their captain.
Following the playoff defeat to Carolina, Tkachuk stated that he was dedicated to Ottawa. Later articles suggested a different conclusion, with a new beginning and a chance to play alongside Matthew Tkachuk in Florida.

With a reconfigured roster, the Senators are now continuing. However, Staios’ admission makes it clear that this breakup had been festering in secret for some time.
