Head coach Travis Green was taken aback by Brady Tkachuk’s trade demand, which also altered the course of the Ottawa Senators.
On the podcast 100% Hockey, Green broke his quiet, revealing that Steve Staios had told him about the request around 3 to 4 weeks after the season’s conclusion.
He was enraged and taken aback, the coach confessed. Green was thrilled about taking the job in Ottawa in part because of Tkachuk.
Green anticipated that his captain would stay at the center of the Senators’ growth once the team made it back to the playoffs. Following a sweep in the first round, Tkachuk, on the other hand, pleaded for a new beginning.
On June 21, Ottawa sent him to Florida in exchange for three first-round choices and one second-round pick, putting an end to one of the biggest NHL stories of the summer.
Before reaching out to Tkachuk, Green held off until the transaction was finalized. Before having a personal conversation, he wanted the business aspects completed with the agent, Staios, and the player.
Travis Green discusses Brady Tkachuk’s trade request
Tkachuk and Green are said to have had a pleasant chat. During his career, Green also played alongside Keith Tkachuk and plans to maintain his friendship with the family.
Staios immediately used one of the first-round picks that had been acquired to bring William Eklund to Ottawa from San Jose. The forward group also welcomed Andre Burakovsky.
Tkachuk’s emotional impact or physical presence within the locker room will not be diminished by those new players. They do provide more skill and varied options for Green throughout the top six.
The coach thinks Ottawa’s biggest improvements will originate from within. Players who might advance further, according to him, were Tim Stutzle, Jake Sanderson, Ridly Greig, Dylan Cozens, Shane Pinto, Fabian Zetterlund, and Tyler Kleven.
Without Tkachuk last year, the Senators also had a 12-5-5 record. Green now has proof that the club can play without its prior captain setting the pace thanks to that record.
Toronto will be the opponent for Ottawa’s season opener on October 3. On October 21st, Tkachuk will make his debut as a Panther, and all of the feelings surrounding the trade will come to light.
Green has already started focusing on the team still in Ottawa, despite his apparent irritation. The Senators must demonstrate that the reset has made them stronger after losing their skipper and gaining significant assets.
