Gavin McKenna was selected first overall in June, and Connor McDavid has since expressed some thoughts about his move to the Toronto Maple Leafs. McKenna “will have his hands full in Toronto,” the captain of the Oilers admitted, but he expressed confidence that the youngster is prepared for the challenge and will gain from a solid support system, which includes Auston Matthews.
One of hockey’s best stars had a measured, thoughtful attitude, it seemed. However, one well-known Toronto media figure strongly objected to it.
Additionally, a number of commentators emphasized what they perceived to be a paradox in Seixeiro’s logic. It’s not immediately obvious why McDavid would be unqualified to discuss the subject if Edmonton’s pressure is “consistently intense” while Toronto’s may actually go silent at times.
Others dismissed the take as nothing more than fake outrage meant to get attention over the break. Sports media has “evolved into professional rage bait,” one commentator said in a blunt assessment of the feeling.
In essence, this is not a discussion about McKenna’s ability or preparedness. It is a question of whether anybody outside the Toronto area can really comprehend the specific intensity that accompanies becoming the Maple Leafs’ next star.
As he gets ready for what will probably be one of the most closely examined rookie seasons in recent memory, McKenna will have to ignore the noise coming from all sides.
