It seems like, at least for the time being, veteran forward Nicolas Aube-Kubel’s illustrious National Hockey League career is coming to an end.
According to official reports, there had been whispers during the weekend that Aube-Kubel was exploring options to play abroad in the upcoming season. Aube-Kubel has now agreed to terms on a new contract with Dinamo Minsk, one of the premier teams in the Kontinental Hockey League, according to a report from Jeremy Garrett of Hockey News Hub.
The new contract for Aube-Kubel will be in effect until May 2027.
If this is really the last time we’ll see Aube-Kubel play in the NHL, it marks the conclusion of a fantastic career in which Aube-Kubel beat the odds to win the ultimate prize in hockey. Aube-Kubel, who was originally selected by the Philadelphia Flyers in the second round (48th overall) of the 2014 NHL Entry Draft, would spend the first three seasons of his professional career in the American Hockey League. During the 2018–19 season, Aube-Kubel would spend nine games with the Flyers, but it wasn’t until the 2019–20 season that he solidified his position on the team.
Aube-Kubel has now played in 310 regular season games, scoring 32 goals and dishing out 50 assists for 82 career points across his time with the Flyers, Colorado Avalanche, Toronto Maple Leafs, Washington Capitals, Buffalo Sabres, New York Rangers, and Minnesota Wild.
However, the 2021–2022 season would mark the pinnacle of his NHL career, when he would win a Stanley Cup with the aforementioned Avalanche and engrave his name in hockey history forever.
