Dolphins QB Tua Tagovailoa Deemed Potential Dak Prescott Replacement for Cowboys

The ongoing contract negotiations between the Dallas Cowboys and Dak Prescott have yet to yield an extension agreement.

As Prescott heads into the final year of his current contract, speculation mounts about his future, with K.D. Drummond of Cowboys Wire contemplating potential replacements. Among the options discussed is Tua Tagovailoa, the Miami Dolphins’ quarterback.

Drummond highlighted Tagovailoa’s impressive performance, noting his leadership in passing yards for the NFL in 2023 and his top rankings in various passing categories in 2022. With Tagovailoa set to play the 2024 season under the fifth-year option and benefiting from a strong supporting cast, including recently acquired talents like Odell Beckham and Tyreek Hill, Drummond suggests Miami might be an attractive landing spot for Prescott if he enters free agency in 2025.

Both the Dolphins and the Cowboys face uncertainty regarding their quarterback situations, prompting speculation about potential shifts in the upcoming seasons.

Meanwhile, reports from Jeremy Fowler of ESPN indicate that negotiations between the Dolphins and Tagovailoa have commenced. While Fowler suggests that a deal isn’t imminent, the Dolphins are reportedly earnestly pursuing an agreement. Speculation from Spotrac in February estimated a lucrative four-year, $220 million extension for Tagovailoa with significant guaranteed money, reflecting the team’s commitment to securing their quarterback’s future.

If Tagovailoa were to join the Dallas Cowboys in the upcoming offseason, he could bring a fresh dynamic to their quarterback position, closely matching Prescott’s impressive stats.

At 26 years old, the Alabama standout showcased his prowess by leading the league in passing yards, boasting 4,624 yards, 29 touchdowns, and 14 interceptions. In comparison, the 30-year-old Prescott tallied 4,516 yards, 36 touchdowns, and nine interceptions.

Like the Miami Dolphins, the Cowboys boast formidable offensive weapons, with Tagovailoa accustomed to throwing to talents like Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle. In Dallas, he’d find targets like CeeDee Lamb, Brandin Cooks, and others ready to amplify his passing game.

Despite their comparable performances, Tagovailoa’s youth could pique the Cowboys’ interest, especially if they’re hesitant to commit long-term to Prescott.

In a twist of fate, Kinnu Singh of FanSided suggested Prescott as a potential replacement for Tagovailoa in Miami, highlighting Prescott’s stellar 2023 season and his ability to elevate an offense with explosive playmakers.

While swapping quarterbacks between teams isn’t commonplace, the scenario isn’t entirely implausible given the circumstances, offering an intriguing possibility for both franchises.
