Done Deal: Boston Red Sox outfielder signs deal with rival to bolster positional depth

Boston will continue to face off against a former friend

When they see outfielder Alex Verdugo in pinstripes next season, Boston Red Sox fans will need to psychologically get ready.

He won’t, however, be the only outfield player with Red Sox links to call Yankee Stadium his home field come 2024.

FanSided’s Robert Murray said on Tuesday, “Outfielder Greg Allen is signing a minor-league contract with the New York Yankees, sources say.” “The deal includes an invite to spring training.”

After joining the Red Sox organization at the beginning of the 2023 season, Allen made an impression during his brief stay.

In 37 games for Triple-A Worcester, the 30-year-old hit.250 with 11 extra-base hits, including two home runs, 15 RBIs, and a.795 OPS. The veteran’s 23 stolen bases in as many tries was his most remarkable statistic.

Two months into the season, he was traded to the Yankees for monetary considerations and right-handed pitcher Diego Hernández.

Allen is returning to the Yankees for his third tenure with the team following a stopover with the Milwaukee Brewers.

Despite never being called up to the major leagues in Boston the previous season, Allen could now, on the other side of the storied rivalry, share an outfield with Verdugo.

When he tries to join a much-improved Yankees outfield at some point next season, the quick-witted and cunning defender will be someone to watch.
