Manchester United has improved the roster after the transfer market closed. But not to the extent that many would prefer.
Rasmus Hojlund is the only striker who has been signed. Is this sufficient given that Anthony Martial, the backup, is prone to injury?
The chance to spend money to sign athletes or obtain loans is no longer an option. However, signing free agents is still a possibility that United might investigate.
The free agency pool is always small at this point, but here are three potential attackers United would want to check into for further depth:
Marega Moussa
Moussa Marega, a colleague from another country who played for Andre Onana, is now a free agent after Al-Hilal of the Saudi Pro League terminated his contract due to the club’s recent spending binge.
Marega scored 25 goals in 75 games with Al-Hilal, including one against Real Madrid in the Club World Cup.
With Porto, where he scored 72 goals in 191 games, the 32-year-old enjoyed his most productive run in Europe.
Diaz, Mariano
Mariano Diaz, a former number 7 for Real Madrid, is a free agent at the age of 30.
Real decided to re-sign him because he was destined for greatness after scoring 21 goals in 45 games for Lyon.
However, his second stint at the Spanish club was unsuccessful, and this summer he was dismissed.
Gomez, Papu
On the day of the transfer deadline, Atlanta decided to release Papu Gomez, according to Fabrizio Romano.
The 35-year-old, who plays more as a winger than a striker, has contributed significantly to Atalanta’s thrilling recent football, scoring 59 goals for the team and, according to Transfermarkt statistics, providing 72 assists.
Gomez would be a complete wildcard to throw in if United wanted to give the attack a bit more originality and ingenuity.
Or United might simply keep what they currently have.
Manchester United will probably stick with their current alternatives and avoid the free agent market.
In an emergency, this might entail relying on Joe Hugill, a 19-year-old striker who wasn’t loaned away. Jadon Sancho, who was a striker in the preseason, might potentially be deployed in that position.
