Head coach Kris Knoblauch and the Edmonton Oilers are really struggling with their goalkeepers as the NHL trade deadline approaches.
Earlier in the season, general manager Stan Bowman took a big chance. He traded their own goalie Stuart Skinner and a solid defenseman Brett Kulak to the Pittsburgh Penguins in exchange for veteran goalie Tristan Jarry.
The team really believed that bringing in Jarry would solve their goaltending issues. However, this major trade has turned into a big problem.
Skinner has been fantastic since joining the Penguins, helping them rise in the rankings.
On the flip side, Jarry has not performed well in Edmonton. He has been pulled from games multiple times and continues to struggle with making saves, holding a low save percentage of below . 890 since the trade.
A Big Goaltending Upgrade Is Necessary
Since they have a real chance to win the Stanley Cup, Edmonton can’t waste the best years of their star players on poor goaltending. NHL analyst Pierre McGuire recently proposed a good solution to this obvious problem.
During a recent discussion on TSN690, McGuire strongly suggested that the Oilers should move quickly to acquire superstar goalie Sergei Bobrovsky.
The Florida Panthers have just announced they are ready to trade their players after losing too many games. They are very willing to let go of their players who will be free agents soon, and Bobrovsky is at the very top of that list.
If the Oilers genuinely want to make a strong playoff push and win the Cup this spring, pursuing Bobrovsky would definitely be a smart decision.
Bringing in an experienced goalie like Bobrovsky, who has plenty of playoff experience, would quickly boost their defense and allow their offense to play more freely.
Even though Bowman doesn’t have a lot of cash right now, it’s really crucial to handle those financial problems when a championship is on the line.
