Red Sox officially sign ex-brewers hurler to bolster pitching depth

The Boston Red Sox, whose owner John Henry is still, for whatever reason, frugal, have been waiting for Jordan Montgomery and agent Scott Boras to ultimately drop their asking price.

Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow has been adding some aid in the interim with the pennies he’s been given; the most recent addition may have an impact on the depth of the bullpen and rotation.

The Red Sox transaction log shows that Jason Alexander has signed a minor league deal. Not the actor from Seinfeld who portrayed George Costanza, but the journeyman pitcher hoping to make an impact on the Red Sox’s plans this season.

The past several seasons for Alexander have seen ups and downs. Last season, while pitching for Triple-A Nashville, he recorded a 5.86 ERA, 35-to-19 strikeout-to-walk ratio,.322 batting average against, and 1.66 WHIP in 55 1/3 innings.

Not only did his numbers not live up to expectations, but his low strikeout rate and high BAA suggest that his disappointing season was not an anomaly.

But in 63 1/3 innings the year before, he recorded a 2.84 ERA, a 47 to 17 strikeout-to-walk ratio, a.244 batting average against, and a 1.18 WHIP for the Nashville Sounds. His success was sufficient to earn him a call-up to the major leagues, where he pitched 71 2/3 innings with a 5.40 ERA.
