Red Sox promote relief prospect Isaac Stebens to High-A Greenville

The Red Sox recently made a move within their minor league system, promoting Isaac Stebens, a promising relief pitcher, from Low-A Salem to High-A Greenville, according to the team’s official Minor League Baseball transactions log.

At 22 years old, Stebens was selected by Boston in the 16th round of the previous year’s draft from Oklahoma State University. Hailing from Stillwater, he signed with the Red Sox for $150,000 following an impressive collegiate career where he earned NCBWA third-team All-American honors, showcasing his pitching prowess over 64 1/3 innings.

Despite not having the chance to play for a minor league affiliate immediately after signing, Stebens made a noteworthy professional debut earlier this month in Salem. Over six appearances with the Red Sox’s Carolina League affiliate, he demonstrated his capabilities on the mound, conceding only one earned run on seven hits while recording 14 strikeouts in 11 innings of relief work. Moreover, he displayed solid control, issuing just four walks during this span. Additionally, Stebens proved himself in high-pressure situations by successfully converting three out of four save opportunities.

This promotion to High-A Greenville reflects the organization’s confidence in Stebens’ p

otential and performance, offering him a new challenge as he continues to develop within the Red Sox farm system.

Standing tall at 6 feet and weighing in at 194 pounds, Stebens brings a distinctive style to the mound with his unconventional delivery. Sporting a low three-quarters arm slot and a minimal leg kick, he stands out among his peers. His arsenal includes a sinking fastball that typically sits in the low-90s, occasionally reaching speeds of up to 95 mph. Complementing his fastball is a sharp slider that clocks in around the high-70s, adding depth to his pitching repertoire as noted in his SoxProspects.com scouting report.

Despite his young age, Stebens, who won’t celebrate his 23rd birthday until December, has already caught the attention of the Boston Red Sox organization. He becomes the third member of the Red Sox’ 2023 draft class to earn a promotion from Salem to Greenville during the current season. Joining the ranks alongside 12th-rounder Max Carlson and 18th-rounder Zach Fogell, Stebens showcases the potential and talent within the organization. However, it’s worth noting that Carlson was recently sent back down to Salem after a brief stint with the Drive, having made just one appearance before his return.
