Ilkay Gundogan has discussed his preferred positions since completing a transfer from triple-champions Manchester City to Barcelona
The addition of the German international will expand Xavi’s options in midfield, though it’s not yet obvious how the manager intends to deploy Gundogan.
The newest addition to Barcelona has discussed potential places and the midfield positions he enjoys the best.
It’s odd because it has occasionally changed in the past, even. It’s been incredibly enjoyable for me to play a more aggressive role over the last two years, get into the box more, and score goals,” he remarked.
“There was one season in particular when I played as a holding midfielder, a ‘6’, all by myself. I have liked playing in the same position for the past 15, 16, and 17 games; it was fantastic, and we won the league by one point over Liverpool. In a completely different circumstance, it was a fantastic moment.
“As a result, I believe that interpretation is key. I can play either an offensive or more defensive role with ease. What you do outside of your position and where the coach wants you, in my opinion, matters more than where you play. I’ve demonstrated in the past that I can play either an offensive or defensive position, so I’m prepared to play wherever.
